I’m back. Computer was in the shop.
I wanted to quickly mention a group show that happened in 2004 at LA’s Peres Projects, “such things I do just to make myself more attractive to you”. The artists involved were assume vivid astro focus, Elliot Hundley, Terence Koh, Kim Fisher, Bruce LaBruce, and Mathew Cerletty. Koh submitted a work from which the exhibition drew its name, reproduced here and here:.
Koh also released a limited edition art book, also called “such things I do just to make myself more attractive to you,” and it’s sold out at peres’ website but much more expensive copies appear to still be available at Printed Matter. Three booklets in a box, on a layer of jelly beans. One booklet has cigarette burns, another has “internet images of attractive young men.”
Again we have an example of the oblique lyric-drop, a title that evocatively, distantly calls on Morrissey’s songs merely to establish affinity or mood, in a trend reminiscent of the ’20s craze for modernist novelists (Hemingway, Faulkner, et al) to frame their tales in what must have seemed like randomly generated Shakespeare quotes. Sound and fury, signifying nothing.
Koh’s old web site, Asianpunkboy, has a related reference in the form of a Smiths stream that I could do no justice in paraphrasing:
